The Work of Life
Every single therapy session is different, but what remains constant is the work: the process. The therapist’s job is to help the client through the process of their life. This can be accomplished any number of ways in any number of schools of thought, but ultimately a successful therapist is no more than a guide.
One of the most interesting examples of this is psychologist Linda Sherby’s blog, Inside/Outside, where she recounts information about her sessions—from both her own and her patients’ points of view. By weaving in her own perspective, she reveals her biases, and how each therapy session is also part of her own life process.
Life is a process, whatever guide you use, and sometimes it can make it easier to handle if we remind ourselves of that.
