A powerful photo rejects judgments on skirt length
Rosea Lake’s picture (above) has sparked quite the controversy, but ironically the message of her accompanying post “Judgments” has largely been ignored. She writes:
“Working on this project really made me examine my own opinions, preconceptions and prejudices about “slutty” women and women who choose to cover all of their skin alike…
I’d like to think I’m more open now.”
While widely-publicized articles have addressed how poignant the image is, most have focused on the commentary it provides on social pressures on women—as the title of one, The Balancing Act of Being Female; or Why We Have So Many Clothes, suggests—as opposed to the photographer’s intended message, which appears to be reminding us all to pass less judgment.
Yes, women have a lot of clothes, and we feel that we need to for different social situations and because it’s how we express ourselves. We create and accept those pressures, alongside the rest of society. But while we’re doing so, perhaps we should remind ourselves not to buy into the judgment of others—perpetuating it or believing it about ourselves.
