10 Things You Get Wrong About Therapy: I Don’t Think You’re Crazy

And other common misconceptions

When I tell friends or boyfriends that my parents are both psychotherapists, inevitably their reaction is: “Oh no! They’re going to psychoanalyze me.”

Point #3 in 10 Things I Wish Everyone Knew About Therapy, written by a therapist: “My job is not to psychoanalyze you.” Likewise, it is not my parents’ job to psychoanalyze my friends or boyfriends, any more than it is ANY parent’s job.

In fact, having therapist parents gives you more freedom, understanding, and space to be who you are, and be with whoever you are with. In the boyfriend example, that’s freedom be it your bad-boy phase, your athlete phase, your real-potential-life-partner phase.

Likewise, seeing a good therapist frees you to be who you are and gives you space to breathe and grow.
